Rabat – Two goals from Jude Bellingham and a penalty conversion from Harry Kane gave England a 3-2 victory against co-hosts Mexico at Estadio Azteca in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After this painful loss, technical director Javier Aguirre officially announced his departure from the Mexican national team.
In the post-match press conference aguirre expressed his disappointment, saying:
“I had hoped to bid farewell to these great fans with a historic victory befitting our ambitions. This elimination is very painful, but at the same time, I leave my post feeling extremely proud of what we have achieved.”
Javier Aguirre also talked about the next phase of Mexican football, stressing the idea of supporting the next generation that would lead the national team. Most importantly, the next coach, Rafael Marquez.
Rafael Marquez will take over as Mexico’s head coach after the tournament. Marquez, a former defender under Pep Guardiola at Barcelona, will step up from his current role as assistant to Javier Aguirre.
“I wish Rafael Márquez all the best; he possesses all the necessary leadership and technical qualities to continue this football project, and I am certain that he is capable of shouldering this great responsibility and even surpassing what I have achieved,” added Aguirre.
Mexico City lived an unforgettable moment of celebration, not because of its exit but to say thank you to a team that gave their all and honoured their country—an unforgettable memory of winning all four matches before the defeat against England.
