Rabat – The UN-backed food security body has released an alert stating that “the worst-case scenario of famine is playing out in the Gaza Strip.”
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a coalition of different NGOs and governments, has said that “mounting evidence shows that widespread starvation, malnutrition, and disease are driving a rise in hunger-related deaths.”
The IPC is a global initiative by UN agencies, aid groups, and governments to identify famine conditions.
This comes as aid agencies have been unable to provide sufficient aid supplies at the border crossings to cope with the mounting pressure.
Israel has been bombarding Gaza since October 2023. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification said, “the latest data indicates that food thresholds have not been reached for food consumption in most of the Gaza Strip and for acute malnutrition in Gaza City.”
The 2.1 million population of Palestinians is at “critical risk” of famine, and faced “extreme levels of food insecurity.”
This alert is not a formal designation of famine in Gaza, but this is due to the IPC not having enough access to carry out a full analysis. The evidence that is presented shows that Gaza is at the worst point in the crisis.
The IPC has called for “immediate action to end hostilities to stop the humanitarian crisis and catastrophic human suffering.” The proportion of households experiencing extreme hunger has doubled.
The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterre said, “The wholesale destruction of Gaza is intolerable. It must stop.”
Malnutrition has grown from 4.4% in May to 16.5% to unprecedented levels in July.
The few supply drops that have been made have not reached a large majority of people, and there has been fighting over the supply drops that have been made.
Most government agencies have criticised the severity of the famine,
Donald Trump, during a meeting with Keir Starmer, stated that the situation represents a tragedy.
The Israeli Government has denied the allegations. The foreign minister, Gideon Sa’ar, has said that the UN announcement is a lie, and in reality, that his nation is allowing aid.
However, this crisis is only getting worse, and it is now clear to the world what the true situation is.
