Morocco has started preparing for its 2026 legislative elections following direct orders from King Mohammed VI.Â
The Interior Ministry held two key meetings with political party leaders to discuss the upcoming electoral process.
The meetings follow the King’s Throne Speech on July 29, where he announced that the next legislative elections will take place on their regular constitutional schedule.
 The monarch stressed that lawmakers must prepare and adopt the General Electoral Code for the House of Representatives before the end of 2025.
In his speech, the King tasked Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit, with ensuring careful preparation of the next legislative election. He ordered political consultations with all relevant stakeholders to make the process transparent and inclusive.
Political party leaders from across the spectrum welcomed the King’s decision to launch election preparations through consultation with concerned parties. They commended the approach as consistent with the royal method of managing major national events through dialogue and constructive discussion.
The two meetings provided a platform to focus on fundamental questions related to the general framework for the 2026 legislative elections.
Participants showed a spirit of responsibility and collective commitment to make this election a prime opportunity to confirm Morocco’s unique electoral model within its democratic framework.

Following the productive exchanges during both meetings, political parties agreed to submit their proposals for the 2026 legislative election framework to the Interior Ministry before the end of August.
The ministry will then examine the proposals to agree on legislative measures to develop and submit during the country’s upcoming autumn parliamentary session.
The collaborative approach for the next legislative elections demonstrates the North African country’s commitment to transparent democratic processes and inclusive political participation across party lines.
