Rabat – The US is stepping up efforts in an attempt to arrest Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom Washington accuses of having connections to cartels.

The US is promising anyone with information leading to his arrest a $50 million bounty. Initially, the US put in place a reward of $25 million for information leading to his arrest.

US Attorney General Bondo announced the increase in reward money, accusing Maduro of having connections with cartels.

“He is one of the largest narco-traffickers in the world and a threat to our national security. Therefore, we doubled his reward to $50 million,” Bondi said on Thursday.

Bondi vowed that Maduro will not escape justice under Trump’s leadership, adding that he will be held accountable for his “despicable crimes.”

The US official announced that the US Department of Justice seized over $700 million in assets linked to Maduro, Al Jazeera reported. His assets include two private jets, nine vehicles. Bondi also claimed that “tonnes of seized cocaine had been traced directly to the president.”

A federal court in the US indicted Maduro in 2020 for drug charges. This was during Trump’s first term as President. Biden, before leaving the Oval Office, raised the bounty to $25 million.

Now, Trump’s administration doubled the reward money in an attempt to arrest Maduro.

Maduro is the leader of the United Socialist Party and has been serving as the President of Venezuela since 2013.

He is the country’s 53rd president of Venezuela.

Despite backlash and protests, Maduro managed to stay in power after last year’s election.

Many countries have responded to the situation, calling for the urgent need for Venezuela to adhere to the principles of human rights and democratic governance in the wake of rising tensions in the country.

Venezuela witnessed a post-election turmoil that began when opposition candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, claimed a landslide victory over Maduro. However, Maduro has refused to release official results and continues to suppress the opposition through mass arrests.
