Global Sumud Flotilla Faces Weather Setback While Sailing to Break Gaza Blockade

The flotilla, the most ambitious civilian maritime mission yet, hopes for a peaceful, nonviolent sail to reach Gaza shores, break Israel’s blockade, and deliver aid to Gaza civilians.

Organizers said the mission is designed not only to deliver much-needed aid but also to bring awareness to the illegality of Israel’s genocidal siege on Gaza.

Rabat — As the Israeli-induced starvation keeps claiming the lives of Palestinian civilians in genocide-torn Gaza, a fleet of more than 50 ships carrying activists, humanitarian supplies, and medical professionals has embarked on the most ambitious civilian maritime mission yet to break Israel’s blockade.

Known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, the initiative brings together delegations from at least 44 countries across six continents in a show of solidarity with desperate Gazans.

The first wave of small civilian vessels departed from Spanish ports on August 31, with plans to rendezvous with a second convoy in Tunisia later this week.

Organizers said the mission is designed not only to deliver much-needed aid but also to bring awareness to the illegality of Israel’s genocidal siege on Gaza, which has tightened since nearly a year ago.

However, due to rough Mediterranean conditions, the ships’ teams decided to turn back to Barcelona on Monday, as winds topping 55.5 km/h made sailing unsafe, especially for smaller boats.

According to organizers, safety comes first. They said in a statement that they made the “decision to prioritize the safety and well-being of all participants and to safeguard the success of our missions.”

Gaza’s man-made famine

The initiative comes at a time when Israel has been imposing a blockade on all border crossings, denying entry of food and medical aid to Gaza.

The inhumane, catastrophic situation in Gaza is worsening. Gaza health authorities reported yesterday that seven more have died from starvation and malnutrition in the enclave, raising the total to 339 deaths, including 124 children.

The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) uses this starvation approach as what international powers have described as a weapon of war. Some major countries are calling for imposing economic sanctions or halting trade deals with Israel over its genocide on Gaza.

Meanwhile, many European countries have shown their intention to recognize the statehood of Palestine, which confirms that Israel’s international isolation is growing.

What is the Flotilla?

“Flotilla” is a Spanish word that means a small flota (fleet) of ships that usually sail with the aim of delivering food, humanitarian, and medical aid supplies to regions in crisis.

Four major coalitions, which are long-standing grassroots movements, are behind the mission. These include groups that have previously participated in land and sea campaign initiatives to Gaza.

The groups are Global Movement to Gaza (GMTG), Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, and Sumud Nusantara.

Previous efforts have often been intercepted by IOF, sometimes violently, most notably in 2010 when commandos stormed the Mavi Marmara, killing nine activists.

Despite these risks, participants said they are committed to a nonviolent journey. “This is about human dignity and solidarity,” one organizer told reporters. “We will keep sailing until the blockade ends.”

The relaunch is expected later this week, with activists insisting that international attention will remain on Gaza whether the ships reach its shores or not.
