On a visit in Rabat, a delegation from the Kenyan Parliament recently reaffirmed the East African country’s newfound position on the Sahara dispute, hailing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only sustainable approach to resolve the long-standing territorial dispute.
The delegation started its visit in Morocco today, with dialogue and exchange of talks with officials from the Committee on Interior, Territorial Communities, and Infrastructure.
The delegation met officials from the Committee on Finance, Planning, and Economic Development at the House of Councillors, the lower chamber of the Moroccan parliament.
This comes as Morocco and Kenya signal their shared desire to further cement their bilateral newfound strategic friendship. In the aftermath of Kenya’s announcement of support for the Moroccan position in the Sahara, the two countries have pledged to deepen their ties in a wide range of areas.
Kenya announced its newfound Sahara position in May, during a visit by Musalia Mudavadi, the country’s Prime Cabinet Secretary.
In a joint statement following Mudavadi’s meeting with Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita, Kenya said that it intends to cooperate with like-minded states to promote Morocco’s autonomy initiative and its implementation.
It also welcomed the growing consensus and the momentum led by King Mohammed VI in favor of the autonomy initiative, which the international community increasingly sees as the most viable proposal to end the Sahara dispute.
The position challenges the traditional path promoted by a shrinking number of countries like Algeria and South Africa, which have continued to lobby in favor of the separatist Polisario Front’s quest to undermine Morocco’s territorial integrity.
Impressed by ‘Morocco’s remarkable progress on all fronts’
Beyond the Sahara dispute, Kenya has expressed interest in expertise sharing, hailing the development and progress that Morocco has achieved at different levels, including infrastructure.
“Morocco, a country where peace and security prevail, impresses with its remarkable progress on all fronts,” Godfrey Osotsi, Chair of the Special Committee on Country Public Investments and Special Funds in the Kenyan Senate, said today.
He also conveyed the Senate’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Morocco’s House of Councillors in serving Africa’s causes.
The Kenyan delegation will continue its visit until September 7.
