Rabat – Mali has turned to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to challenge Algeria, accusing its neighbor of shooting down a Malian army drone in early April inside Malian territory.

In a statement issued Thursday, Bamako confirmed that it had submitted a formal application to the ICJ. Malian authorities denounced the destruction of the drone as “an act of aggression” and “a hostile gesture” that violated international law.

The confrontation began on April 1, when Mali claimed Algeria struck a reconnaissance drone within Malian airspace. Algiers rejected the accusation, asserting that radar evidence from its defense ministry proved the aircraft crossed into Algerian territory.

The fallout escalated into a full-blown diplomatic standoff. Mali and its allies in Niger and Burkina Faso recalled their ambassadors from Algeria, and Algiers responded by withdrawing its envoys from Bamako and Niamey. Each side then closed its airspace to the other.

Mali said it repeatedly asked Algeria to provide proof of the alleged airspace violation, but received no reply.

In its statement, Bamako went further, accusing the Algerian authorities of harboring ties with terrorist groups active along the border.

Relations between the two countries have been deteriorating for years. In January, Mali’s ruling junta announced the termination of the 2015 Algiers Peace Agreement, once viewed as a key framework for stabilizing the north.

The dispute comes against the backdrop of Mali’s long-running security crisis, marked by insurgencies from groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, as well as communal and criminal violence.

Moreover, Algeria’s interference in the Sahel region, notably in countries like Mali and Burkina Faso, is widely believed to be part of a broader pattern of destabilization that stretches across many African countries.

While Rabat continues to gain international momentum for its stance on the Western Sahara dispute, Algeria remains firmly entrenched in its campaign to undermine Morocco’s territorial integrity.
