St Andrews  – Morocco is sharing its artistic excellence as Guest of Honor at the 36th São Paulo Biennial, a prestigious and renowned art event currently taking place in Brazil.

Moroccan artists and curators will play an integral role in the Biennial. Co-curating the event is Moroccan national Alya Sebti, who has also co-curated Maniesta of Marseille, the Daraka Biennial, and the 5th edition of the Marrakesh Biennial.

In an interview with MAP, Alya Sebi said this range of Moroccan artists are symbolic of intergenerational dialogue in creative settings, like the Biennial.

“The Moroccan participation fully illustrated this mission: established figures such as Chaibia Tala, Farid Belkahi, and Mohamed Melehi assert a distinct modern identity, while contemporary artists like Amina Agueznay, Laila Hida, Leila Alaoui, and Meriem Bennanu carry this legacy forward, establishing an international dialogue,” said Sebi.

Beyond artistic contribution, Royal Air Maroc (RAM) is the designated carrier of the Sao Paulo Biennial, providing Moroccan logistics, infrastructure, and capabilities.

Underlying motifs of emancipation, decolonization and care accord to the Biennial’s goal to “rethink humanity as a verb, a living practice, in a world that requires reimagining relationships, asymmetries and listening as the basis for coexistence.”

The inspiration behind the art event’s theme is primarily drawn from Brazil’s natural landscape, and traditional poetry.

Even the dates and duration of the Biennial (Aug 6, 2025 – Jan 11, 2026) follow a variety of native Brazilian birds’ migratory patterns, drawing on motifs of “freedom from national borders and state classifications.”

120 artists are participating in the Biennial, including from six other Middle Eastern and African countries in addition to Morocco. Alongside performances and exhibitions, the Biennial will showcase debates, tributaries, and educational publications on the history of the grand art event.
