A video of a young girl covered in burns and bruises circulated on social media on Tuesday, shocking Casablanca residents as they learned the story behind the girl’s plight.

The accompanying voiceover claimed the child had suffered abuse at the hands of her mother.

Police acted quickly to identify the child’s mother and a 33-year-old man linked to her. Both were arrested in the Oulfa district on suspicion of involvement in criminal acts against the girl.

The five-year-old child received immediate protection. Officers referred her to a hospital, where she received medical care and support from social services trained to help victims of violence.

Authorities have placed the suspects in custody while a judicial investigation, under the supervision of the public prosecutor, seeks to uncover the full circumstances of the case and the motives behind the creation and circulation of the video.

Child abuse and violence leave scars that go far beyond visible wounds. Children who suffer such harm often face physical pain, fear, and deep emotional trauma that can affect their development, trust, and sense of safety for years.

Research suggests that every act of abuse violates a child’s basic rights and undermines the foundation of their childhood, turning what should be a space of care and protection into one of fear and suffering.

Moroccan authorities and society bear a responsibility to intervene, protect, and provide support to these vulnerable children, ensuring they receive both immediate care and long-term guidance to heal and rebuild their lives.
