Athletics fans will turn their attention on Monday (15 September) to the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo for the men’s 3000m steeplechase final at the 20th World Athletics Championships.

Morocco will be represented by star runner Soufiane El Bakkali and his teammate Salaheddine Ben Yazide. The race is scheduled for 13:55 Moroccan time.

El Bakkali, 29, is chasing history. A win would make him only the third athlete to claim three consecutive world titles in the event, after Kenya’s Moses Kiptanui and Ezekiel Kemboi.

The Moroccan qualified comfortably from the heats, finishing first in his group with a time of 8:26.99.

He will be joined in the final by Benyazid, who impressed in the qualifiers and is looking to make his mark on the global stage. Tunisia’s Ahmed Jaziri will also compete, adding further Arab representation in the race.
