Rabat – The UK, Canada, and Australia have formally recognized the State of Palestine, a coordinated effort aimed at reviving the long-stalled prospects of a two-state solution.
The joint move, officially announced today, delivers one of the most significant international blows yet to Israel’s bloody genocidal campaign against Palestinians.
United Kingdom
For the first time, the UK has officially recognized Palestinian statehood. The decision, a moral and political necessity, is a direct repudiation of Israel’s ongoing genocide and its systematic massacre of Palestinian rights and livelihoods.
London’s recognition follows mounting international frustration with Israel’s defiance of international law and decades of unfulfilled promises of Palestinian self-determination.
Canada
Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney went further, condemning Israel’s methodical attempts to eliminate the possibility of a Palestinian state.
In his official statement, Carney accused Israel of carrying out an “unrelenting policy of settlement expansion in the West Bank, which is illegal under international law,” and of conducting a “sustained assault in Gaza that has killed tens of thousands of civilians, displaced well over one million people, and caused a devastating and preventable famine.”
He added that Canada’s recognition aligns with the UN Charter, the principles of self-determination, and Canada’s longstanding foreign policy tradition. Importantly, Carney made clear that Israel’s current government openly rejects a Palestinian state, leaving no alternative but for the international community to act.
Australia
Australia’s government also confirmed its formal recognition of Palestine. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed in a statement that: “Australia recognises the legitimate and long-held aspirations of the people of Palestine to a state of their own.”
“Today’s act of recognition reflects Australia’s longstanding commitment to a two-state solution, which has always been the only path to enduring peace and security for the Israeli and the Palestinian people.”
The Australian prime minister has arrived in New York ahead of the high-level UN gathering on Monday, which will deliberate Palestinian statehood.
The coordinated recognition by three major Western allies, symbolic yet important in nature, points to the growing impatience with Israel’s defiance of international law.
While Israel continues to expand genocide and maintain its brutal blockade of Gaza, countries once hesitant to openly challenging Tel Aviv are now acting decisively.
Israel’s policies amount to collective punishment and apartheid, with Gaza suffering under catastrophic humanitarian conditions following relentless bombings and restrictions that have pushed the enclave to the brink of famine.
For Palestinians, these recognitions represent more than symbolic gestures. They strengthen Palestine’s international legitimacy, bolster its diplomatic standing, and place Israel under unprecedented pressure to face the consequences of its genocide.
While challenges remain, the decision by the UK, Canada, and Australia could mark the beginning of a wider international shift toward holding Israel accountable for decades of violations.
For years, Palestinians have endured dispossession, siege, and systematic violations of their rights while the world looked on.
The situation has deteriorated beyond repair, with countless dead and entire communities destroyed.
Other countries must now move swiftly to extend recognition and support, rather than letting Israel’s relentless cycle of bloodshed continue.
Just today, at least 46 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since dawn.
Israel’s genocide in Gaza has killed at least 65,283 and wounded 166,575 since October 2023, with many more unaccounted for, believed to be buried under the rubble.
