The Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences (UM6SS) officially opened its new campus in Agadir on Wednesday, marking a major step in strengthening medical and paramedical training in Morocco’s Souss-Massa region.
The launch of the first academic year at the Agadir site was attended by regional governor Said Amzazi and other senior officials. The project, driven by the strategic vision of the UM6SS, is designed to meet the pressing need for qualified health professionals while reinforcing the regional healthcare ecosystem.
University leaders said the Agadir campus will play a direct role in Morocco’s ongoing health system reform and in improving access to care for local communities.
“Beyond our Faculty of Medicine, this campus opens its doors to two exceptional institutions – the Mohammed VI School of Engineering in Health Sciences (EM6ISS) and the Mohammed VI Faculty of Nursing and Health Professions (FM6SIPS),” explained Lahoucine Barrou, general director of the campus and dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
The EM6ISS offers two cutting-edge tracks: digital engineering in health, and biomedical maintenance and engineering. Both fields equip graduates to design, develop, and manage medical technologies, from imaging to surgical robotics – areas where career opportunities are rapidly multiplying.
FM6SIPS, meanwhile, offers training for generalist nurses, anesthesiology and intensive care nurses, operating-room nurses, and radiology technicians. According to Barrou, this diversified portfolio will produce a new generation of caregivers “who are competent, empathetic, and prepared to meet the challenges of modern healthcare.”
The Agadir project also includes the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex, scheduled to open in 2027.
The hospital will have 324 beds and state-of-the-art equipment, forming part of the new teaching and research hub. University officials say it will further strengthen Morocco’s capacity to train health professionals in an environment aligned with international standards.
Broader expansion strategy
The Agadir opening follows the inauguration last June of a UM6SS campus in Marrakech for the 2025-2026 academic year.
That site includes the same three flagship institutions – medicine, health sciences engineering, and nursing – and is supported by an international university hospital currently under construction with more than 300 beds and 20 ultra-modern operating rooms.
Together with Casablanca, Rabat, and Dakhla, these new expansions illustrate UM6SS’s strategy of regional diversification.
The Mohammed VI Foundation for Health Sciences (FM6SS) – which established and oversees UM6SS – aims to bring high-level training closer to students across Morocco, while building local centers of excellence that address the specific healthcare needs of each region.
Officials describe the initiative as part of a national effort to reduce the shortage of health professionals, modernize healthcare training, and prepare Morocco for the demographic and technological challenges facing the sector.
