Fez — The US has taken concrete action to translate its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara through economic cooperation initiatives.

In a significant statement, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced that his country is working on increasing investment in Morocco’s southern provinces, aligning with Washington’s recognition.

Landau made the statements after a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in New York on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly on Wednesday.

Landau confirmed that the decision aligns with the US President Donald Trump’s administration’s global efforts to promote diplomacy through economic initiatives and trade.

“The United States has recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, and as part of the Trump administration’s global initiatives to promote economic and trade diplomacy,” the US diplomat said to reporters.

He further expressed his country’s pleasure “to announce that we will encourage American companies that wish to invest in this region of Morocco.”

During the meeting with Bourita, both sides held discussions over the excellent and longstanding relationship between Morocco and the US.

Landau stressed the US administration’s readiness to work together with Morocco to “promote prosperity, peace, and stability in the region.”

This announcement represents another push for the already excellent US-Morocco relations, particularly regarding the disputed Western Sahara territory.

The US recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in December 2020, in a pivotal move that shifted how the international community looks at the dispute.

Since then, Rabat’s stance on the Sahara has continued to garner international support for its truthful legitimacy over its southern provinces.

The US decision remains a cornerstone of American policy in the region, evidenced by members of the US Congress who have repeatedly reiterated their country’s reinforcement of  Morocco’s position.
