Rabat – Police in the coastal city of Safi have stopped a major drug trafficking operation, seizing more than four tons of hashish in the early hours of Thursday.
Judicial police in Safi carried out the operation in coordination with Morocco’s national intelligence services. It took place in the rural area of Ayer, about 60 kilometers from Safi.
During the raid, police discovered four tons and 725 kilograms of hashish packed into bundles inside a utility vehicle with foreign license plates.Â
The driver managed to escape, and authorities are now working to identify and arrest all those involved.
The seized drugs are believed to have been intended for international trafficking. Police have opened a criminal investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office to determine the full details of the case.
Authorities said this operation is part of Morocco’s continued efforts to fight international drug trafficking. The country’s security services regularly conduct operations to stop the smuggling of drugs and other illegal substances.
