Rabat – For the first time ever, an ounce of gold is selling for more than $4000 per troy ounce (31.1g).

Gold is experiencing its biggest rally since the 1970s. Gold futures have increased by 50% since the beginning of 2025.

Gold is frequently considered a safe investment. During market turbulence and economic downturns, gold is expected to retain or increase its value. Gold is an investment that can be owned and stored, making it a “safe haven asset” in times of instability.

Additionally, global events like France’s political crisis and Japan’s election likely contributed to the rise of gold prices.

US President Donald Trump’s trade war has had an undeniable impact on the global economy and stock-market, since the announcement of tariffs in April of this year.  More recently, the US government shutdown enters its second week, creating further economic uncertainty.

The value of the US dollar has decreased in the past year, offering another explanation for the rally of gold.

Financial analysts argue that gold is becoming an “asset for all occasions” rather than simply a “safe haven asset.” The metal has risen in times of market stability and instability, giving it the appeal to investors.

A rise in global gold prices increases the value of Morocco’s reserves, stabilizing the Moroccan Dirham, while also driving up local prices and making it less accessible for consumers.

The higher local gold prices become, the risk for smuggling and restricted imports increases. This can create both tensions and opportunity in the market.

The informal gold market in Morocco can cause instability in the prices. In September, Moroccan jewelers launched a gold import company to assist in combating the informal market.

Gold is important to Morocco for economic and historical reasons; it serves as a valuable asset for the currency while also being a cultural symbol for wealth.
