South Africa’s World Cup hopes took another knock after a 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe in Durban.
The result leaves Bafana Bafana second in Group C on 15 points, level with leaders Benin but behind on goal difference.

Hugo Broos’s men went into the game needing a win to stay on track for a place at the 2026 World Cup, but they failed to make their dominance count at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Sipho Mbule came close in the first half with a powerful strike that Zimbabwe goalkeeper Washington Arubi did well to stop. Despite several half-chances, Bafana couldn’t find a breakthrough, with Zimbabwe defending deep for most of the match.
The draw adds to South Africa’s troubles after FIFA docked them three points earlier this week for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, against Lesotho. The punishment included a 3-0 loss awarded to Lesotho, dropping Bafana from top spot.
Broos also had to deal with injuries to Relebohile Mofokeng and Iqraam Rayners, both ruled out before the match.
Bafana now face Rwanda in their final qualifier next Tuesday — a must-win game if they are to keep any hope of reaching the World Cup alive.
