Rabat – Abdellah Bouanou, head of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) parliamentary group, reiterated his remarks on Akhannouch’s government, accusing it of corruption and involvement in conflicts of interest.
He made his remarks in a local conference on Sunday.
“Corruption today comes from the head of the government himself,” Bouanou said, accusing the government of providing “generous support for fuel companies.”
For Bouanou, this support exceeded MAD 600 billion ($65.8 billion), which “reflects the extent of rent-seeking encouraged by the current government.”
Bouanou also accused the government of blocking parliamentary initiatives, including a fact-finding committee to evaluate the Green Morocco Plan.
The parliamentarian alleged that the committee was “replaced by an exploratory one to cover up the truth,” calling on the government to resign.
“The outrageous and unethical profits still persist, despite reports from the Competition Council condemning several companies,” he said.
He criticized tax reductions granted to large companies, suggesting that firms investing over MAD 2 billion benefit from this privilege.
You see the head of government doing this himself, shamelessly, and even ministers benefit from these deals,” he said.
According to a report from the Competition Council in July, the fuel market generated a cumulative net profit of nearly MAD 2.3 billion ($230 million) in 2024, with an overall turnover of approximately MAD 77.9 billion ($7.79 billion).
The report suggested that nine major companies – including Afriquia gas owned by Akhannouch – maintain dominance in the market.
In 2023, Bouanou made similar remarks, criticizing the government’s refusal to address challenges related to soaring prices of basic goods.
“How is it possible that Akhannouch’s net worth increased from $1 billion to $2 billion between 2020 and 2022?” Bouanou posed the question, quoting data from Forbes.
He argued that Akhannouch’s wealth is attributable to the increased revenues generated by the energy sector.
