Rabat – EasyJet is expanding in Morocco through the creation of its first base in Africa in Marrakech.
According to Travel Weekly, the aircraft will deploy three aircraft at the city’s airport to serve 24 destinations. The base will also create 100 new jobs.
The new momentum comes as part of a partnership between the company and Morocco’s National Tourism Office. This will enable the airline to offer four million seats in the first year of opening the base, Travel Weekly reported today.
The same source quoted the company’s CEO, Kenton Jarvis, who announced the “historic” decision on the establishment of a new base in Marrakech.
“There is no doubt Morocco is a key market for easyJet: We are the largest carrier to Morocco from the UK and from Switzerland,” he said.
easyJet also celebrates Morocco as the company’s “fastest growing market” outside Europe, and – as Jarvis described – a major destination for easyJet holidays customers.
“With this new development and the launch of our base in Marrakech, we will expand our leisure and business offer to Morocco from more destinations across Europe than ever before, he said.”
The announcement comes as Morocco is boosting its tourism industry through several initiatives to attract more tourists.
By the end of September this year, Morocco welcomed 15 million tourists, marking an 14% increase compared to the same period last year.
The month of September alone recorded 1.4 million arrivals, an increase of 9% year-on-year.
“These 15 million arrivals reflect a strategy that is yielding results,” Minister of Tourism Fatim-Zahra Ammor said.
Last year, Morocco’s global tourism arrivals reached 17.4 million tourists.
