Senegal and Morocco ties

Rabat – Morocco’s Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) will organize a symposium in collaboration with Timbuktu Institute – African Center for Peace Studies, to celebrate Morocco-Senegal cooperation.

The event will take place on October 27 at the ASARI Campus of UM6P in Laayoune.

A statement from UM6P announced today that the two countries will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Establishment Convention that the two countries signed in 1964.

Ratified in 1965, the convention laid the foundation for bilateral ties between the two countries.

“This anniversary coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Green March, a symbol of a national project focused on the development and stability of the South, and today, on an African vision of sustainability and sovereignty, ” a statement from UM6P said.

Senegal is part of a long list of countries that support Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara. To reflect its unwavering support, Senegal opened a consulate general in Morocco’s Dakhla in April 2021. The country consistently reaffirms its position at local, regional, and international forums

The UM6P event in Laayoune, will bring together researchers, policymakers, and entrepreneurs and will cover several themes, including South-South cooperation, food security, and African entrepreneurship.

The event will also adopt the Laayoune Declaration, a framework for academic and scientific cooperation. It will call for the Rabat-Dakar Axis to become a hub of collective intelligence to support the continent’s development and transformation.

Senegal and Morocco share strong bilateral ties marked by frequent exchange of visits between officials and pledges to deepen relations at all levels.

Earlier this month, the two countries renewed their commitment to boosting ties at a meeting between Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the “Invest in Senegal” forum.

During the meeting, President Faye conveyed Senegal’s determination to work with Morocco to make the two countries’ partnership a model of regional cooperation and development.
