Morocco Receives 257 New Buses

Backed by a budget of nearly $1.06 billion, the initiative will cover 37 delegated authorities representing 84 cities and urban areas.

Rabat – Morocco has received a new fleet of 257 buses at the Port of Casablanca as part of the 2025–2029 Urban Public Transport by Bus Program, an initiative designed to modernize mobility and improve transport services across the country’s cities.

The newly delivered vehicles represent the first phase of the program, which aims to equip urban areas with reliable and efficient public transport systems that meet citizens’ expectations in quality and capacity.

The first beneficiaries include Marrakech (49 buses), Agadir (40), Tangier (56), Tetouan (68), and Benslimane (44).

Abdelaaziz Fares, Director General of the Local Development Company (SDL) Marrakech Mobility, said the delivery is part of a new delegated management model developed by the Interior Ministry in partnership with local authorities.

“The Marrakech Transport group received 49 buses, and 97 more will be delivered soon, reaching a total fleet of 207 vehicles by early November,” Fares noted.

He explained that the new buses will help address the increasing demand identified in studies on the restructuring of urban transport networks.

Before entering service, the vehicles will be sent to a logistics platform for the installation of on-board systems designed to ensure efficient fleet management and transparent data sharing between the Interior Ministry, local authorities, and operators.

Fares added that future passengers will benefit from real-time information about routes, line frequencies, and schedules, with ticket purchases available through multiple channels such as websites, ticket vending machines, and mobile applications.

Backed by a budget of nearly MAD 11 billion ($1.06 billion), the Urban Public Transport by Bus Program will cover 37 delegated authorities representing 84 cities and urban areas.

The plan includes the acquisition of nearly 3,800 buses nationwide, alongside the deployment of intelligent management and passenger information systems.

This large-scale program lays the groundwork for a new governance model in sustainable mobility that Morocco aims to reach.
