Rabat – Dozens of Moroccan travelers have reported being held for several days at Tunis-Carthage International Airport despite holding valid travel documents, hotel reservations, and proof of sufficient funds.
The allegations, circulating widely on social media, have triggered outrage and calls for clarification from Moroccan authorities.
Several travelers described online what they called “humiliating” treatment during their detention, citing limited access to food and water and hostile remarks from airport staff.
One viral video shows a Moroccan man saying that officials told them, “You are Moroccans, you are not accepted here,” adding that they were treated “so badly” throughout their confinement.
According to converging reports, in response to the mounting complaints, Morocco’s Consulate General in Tunisia said it had contacted Tunisian security authorities to obtain explanations and ensure the rights of Moroccan nationals were respected.
Tunisian officials, however, maintain that border police are acting “in accordance with the law,” denying any form of discrimination against Moroccans.
This incident comes amid heightened border controls in several countries.
Similar complaints were recently reported in Turkiye, where Moroccan travelers said they were systematically prevented from passing border control simply because of their Moroccan passports.
Those under 35 appear to be the most affected. According to testimonies shared online, border agents reportedly separated Moroccan passengers, confiscated their phones, and called their names one by one before escorting them to a section where all Moroccans are grouped together.
They are then transferred to other inspection areas for further questioning, with the entire process reportedly lasting up to two hours.
