It’s all or nothing in the second leg at the Berkane municipal stadium, which had the Moroccan side mounting a comeback after a tough start to secure a 3–2 aggregate win, after keeping it open 1–1 in Tripoli last week.
The match was off to a flying start in favour of the visitors with Libya’s Muaid Ellafi scoring from out of sight in the 10th minute, completely catching the home defence off guard.
But Berkane showed a lot of heart and quickly got back in the game. With the home crowd cheering them on, they managed to level the score in the 28th minute through a well-timed strike from Paul Bassène.
The first half was a pretty even affair, reflecting the simply massive stakes and tension.
Continental ambitions finally realised
Things got really interesting after the break, with Berkane completely taking control of the game, marking the visitors up and setting the pace. And then in the 54th minute, Ayoub Khairi showed the crowd just what he’s made of by converting a flowing team move, putting the home side in the lead & securing that all-important qualification spot.
Even when Al Ahli Tripoli went on a late push, Berkane’s defence held strong — helped along by the unwavering support of the home captain & that amazing crowd.
This win marks a very special moment for RS Berkane. It’s the qualification to the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time ever. And despite already being successful in African competitions, with a couple of CAF Confederation Cups and a CAF Super Cup under their belt, Berkane has reached a new height.
Come November 3rd, at the SuperSport Studio in Johannesburg, the club will get a look at who they’re up against during the CAF group stage draw. This amazing achievement is a signal that this club is here to make a name for itself in the African arena.
