Rabat – Angola has paid tribute to the late King Hassan II in recognition of Morocco’s support during the southern African nation’s struggle for independence. The ceremony took place in Luanda on Thursday, coinciding with Morocco’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Green March.
During the event, Angolan President João Lourenço presented the Medal of Honor to King Hassan II, which was received on his behalf by Morocco’s Ambassador to Angola, Saadia Alaoui. The medal symbolizes Angola’s gratitude for the assistance Morocco provided during its fight to gain freedom from colonial rule.
The late King Hassan II, who reigned from 1961 until his passing in 1999, played a major role in promoting African unity and supporting liberation movements across the continent. His leadership helped strengthen Morocco’s position as a partner for African independence and solidarity.
The tribute came on a symbolic day for Moroccans, marking the Green March of 1975, when over 350,000 citizens, men and women, marched peacefully to reclaim Morocco’s southern provinces, then under Spanish occupation.
Late King Hassan II made the call for the Green March in a televised speech on October 16, 1975, the same day the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued its advisory opinion confirming that while the territory was not “terra nullius” (empty land) before colonization, it had historical and legal ties to Morocco.
Participants in the peaceful mass march held Qurans and Moroccan flags to demonstrate Morocco’s rightful claim and the unity of its people.
The march began on November 6 and became one of the most powerful moments in modern Moroccan history. The event remains a cornerstone of Moroccan history and national identity.
This year’s commemoration also comes shortly after the United Nations Security Council adopted a new resolution reaffirming support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a serious and credible basis for resolving the Sahara dispute.
The decision was seen as another diplomatic success for Morocco, reinforcing the country’s growing international support under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
