Rabat – The Moroccan Public Prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Casablanca has announced that Sion Assidon, a well-known Moroccan Jewish activist, has passed away following complications from a head injury.
According to an official statement released on Friday following his passing, the death was caused by infectious complications of a traumatic head injury, which led to internal bleeding, brain bruising, and a skull fracture. The report indicates that the injuries were most likely the result of a fall from a ladder while he was trimming his garden.
A three-member medical committee specializing in forensic medicine conducted the autopsy, says the statement. Their findings supported the hypothesis of an accidental fall, which was also consistent with the results of the initial police investigation, it added.
The Public Prosecutor’s office stated that it would take the appropriate legal steps once the investigation is fully completed.
This recent announcement follows an earlier statement issued on August 19, when Assidon was found unconscious at his home and taken to the hospital. At that time, investigators discovered garden tools, a ladder, and trimmed branches in his yard, suggesting he had been working in the garden before losing consciousness.
Assidon’s death had sparked widespread debate online, with various social media users questioning the circumstances of his fall. However, authorities emphasized that no signs of forced entry or violence were found on site, and that only Assidon’s fingerprints were detected on the tools.
Assidon was known in Moroccan civil society for his outspoken positions and his advocacy for coexistence and dialogue within the Jewish and broader Moroccan community. He was widely respected in Morocco and elsewhere for his bold criticism of Zionism and his strong support for the Palestinian cause, which he expressed publicly in interviews and on social media.
Friends and supporters described him as a courageous voice who stood by his beliefs until the end.
