Rabat – Lionel Messi made a surprise visit to Spotify Camp Nou late Sunday night, without informing anyone from FC Barcelona. The moment was unexpected and emotional, as the Argentine shared photos of the visit on social media, along with a heartfelt message:
“Last night I returned to a place that I miss with my soul. A place where I was immensely happy, where you made me feel a thousand times the happiest person in the world. I hope one day I can return, and not only to say goodbye as a player, as I could never do.”
Messi, now 38, is currently in Alicante with Argentina’s national team. His visit to the newly renovated stadium included stepping onto the pitch, where he created countless memories. It was his first time back since leaving the club in 2021.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently suggested that a tribute match could be the perfect way to reopen the stadium, which now seats 105,000. However, “It will depend on whether he wants it,” Laporta said during an open training session.
Messi’s message seems to respond to that idea, hinting at a possible farewell event.
Messi left Barcelona in August 2021 due to financial issues with the club. His departure came during the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevented fans from gathering for a proper send-off. Since then, no official tribute has taken place.
Now, more than four years later, Messi’s return to Camp Nou has reignited hopes for a long-awaited farewell. Whether it happens soon or not, his words and presence remind fans of the deep bond between the player and the club.
