Rabat – King Mohammed VI has invited Morocco’s political parties to submit their proposals and visions to contribute to updating the Autonomy Plan within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty over its provinces in the Western Sahara.
Leaders of the political parties gathered today in a high-level meeting at the Royal Cabinet in Rabat, chaired by the King’s Advisors Taib Fassi Fihri, Omar Azziman, and Fouad Ali El Himma.
High-level officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, attended the meeting.
The monarch’s call comes following the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, recognizing Morocco’s plan as a genuine political solution to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
The royal cabinet said in a statement that the meeting, under high instructions of King Mohammed VI, focused on Morocco’s engagement in updating and detailing Morocco’s autonomy proposal as part of the UN-led political process.
“The meeting falls within his majesty’s, the King’s constant commitment to implementing a participatory and consultative approach whenever the nation’s major causes are at stake,” the statement reads.
King Mohammed VI’s advisors informed the leaders of Morocco’s political parties of the King’s intention to consult them on the crucial issue and invited them to submit their visions and proposals.
During the meeting, political party leaders welcomed the momentum Morocco has garnered in the Western Sahara dispute, expressing their pride in the monarch’s decision to involve national political parties in shaping an integrated and updated autonomy initiative.
The statement further said that the King has emphasized this vision aims to ensure that “our brother from the Tindouf camps” are reunited with their families and can embrace a “united Morocco.”
A historic vote
On October 31, the UN Security Council voted on Resolution 2797, recognizing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a genuine political solution to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
The UN Security Council urged all parties to the dispute, including Algeria, to engage in the UN-led political process without delay and engage in roundtable talks with the autonomy initiative as the basis of these discussions.
Following the vote, King Mohammed VI delivered a speech, celebrating the vote as a historic moment for Morocco’s Western Sahara dossier.
He also emphasized that Morocco will update and detail its autonomy initiative before submitting it to the UN to serve as the sole basis for negotiation.
“With that in mind, I hereby make a sincere appeal to our brothers in the Tindouf camps to seize this historic opportunity in order to reunite with their families and take advantage of the Autonomy Initiative. That Initiative makes it possible for them to contribute to managing their local affairs, develop their homeland, and build their future within a unified Morocco,” the King said on October 31.
King Mohammed VI also declared October 31 as a new holiday, which will be known as National Unity Day.
