Nayef Aguerd is on a really intense and carefully watched recovery road map leading up to the 2025 African Cup of Nations. The medical teams from both Morocco and Olympique de Marseille are in agreement that a groin injury (pubalgia) that’s been plaguing him needs to be treated with a carefully managed approach rather than having him rush back to full training right away.
A careful recovery plan
Aguerd headed to the Moroccan camp in Salé for a few days, where the national team doctors put him through a thorough checkup that included all sorts of advanced medical imaging and testing to get a clear picture of what he needs. The results told them that he needed to take a more laid-back approach to recovery, so he headed back to Marseille to get treated by the club’s medical team.
Aguerd is now following a really tailored treatment plan that includes:
- Giving him a full break whenever the pain flares up to stop things from getting worse.
- Setting up regular one-on-one physio sessions to build up the strength in his core and leg muscles.
- Doing a series of simple exercises to help him get more mobile and stable without putting too much strain on the injury.
- Sorting out a personalized gym routine that builds up his strength without making the injury symptoms any worse.
- Starting out with some light individual training on the pitch, upping the intensity as the pain starts to fade.
- Tricking out a gentle return to training plan that the staff at both OM and the Moroccan federation will work on together, but with no fixed date for when he can get back out there.
Both teams agree that rushing him back could end up sidelining him completely, even for the AFCON 2025 finals. So for now their top priority is to make sure he gets back to 100% fitness without things taking a turn for the worse.
The Atlas Lions medical staff are quietly confident he’ll make it back in time – as long as this plan stays on track and doesn’t hit any bumps.
