Morocco Launches National Platform for Monitoring Maternal Deaths

The digital tool is a national platform developed by the ministry for monitoring, analysis, and prevention of deaths related to pregnancy, childbirth and the neonatal period.

Rabat – The Minister of Health and Social Protection Amine Tahraoui announced at a meeting yesterday the launch of a national platform of the Maternal Death Monitoring System, Audit, and Response (SSDMAR).

The digital tool is a national platform developed by the ministry for monitoring, analysis, and prevention of deaths related to pregnancy, childbirth and the neonatal period.

It aims to identify the associated risk factors and provide corrective and preventative measures for the mother and child at both a national and regional level.

The minister reflected on the initiative, saying that it marks a new step in the reform of the national health system through the development of modern mechanisms dedicated to strengthening performance in all regions of the Kingdom.

It is set to be implemented gradually, in parallel with training professionals and data protection.

The platform contributes to the development of an interactive national map of maternal health indicators and the clinical review while ensuring continuous monitoring and transparency of health data.

Morocco emphasizes the importance of the mother and child, one of the essential pillars of human development and a key indicator of the quality and fairness of the health system, the minister stressed.

Maternal mortality rates rose from 112 to 72.6 deaths per 100,000 live births between 2010 and 2018, while the neonatal mortality rate fell from 21.7 to 13.6 deaths per 1000 live births over the same period, according to the Ministry of Health.
