Fitch Ratings Positions Morocco as Key Market for Investment Management Quality

Rabat – Morocco is increasingly establishing itself as a pivotal hub in evaluating investment funds and asset managers, according to a new report by Fitch Ratings on its Investment Management Quality Ratings (IMQRs).

Published on November 19, the report presents Fitch’s IMQRs as a benchmark for assessing the operational quality and investment capabilities of asset managers.

Morocco, alongside Mexico, emerges as one of the leading national hosts for these ratings, showing the market´s growing relevance in global financial assessments.

A market striving for credibility and alignment

In recent years, Morocco has positioned itself as a regional center for financial services, driven by the Casablanca Stock Exchange and the growth of institutional funds.

To sustain this momentum and attract foreign capital, Moroccan asset managers must meet strict criteria encompassing governance, risk management, operational resilience, and value creation capabilities.

Fitch notes that Morocco hosts the majority of IMQRs at the national level, reflecting regulatory and supervisory practices that differ from international standards.

This localized approach ensures that domestic managers are evaluated fairly against their national peers rather than solely against international benchmarks.

Globally, 71% of international (non-global) IMQRs receive an “excellent” rating. For Moroccan managers, the strategic challenge lies in positioning themselves strongly within the national scale, thereby reinforcing their credibility as trusted participants in regional and global financial flows.

Opportunities for the entrepreneurial ecosystem

IMQRs can be applied at multiple levels, manager, strategy, fund, or mandate, offering Moroccan alternative investment strategies, such as venture capital and private equity, the opportunity for greater recognition.

As international investors increasingly target emerging markets, Morocco presents a promising environment for early-stage funding and high-potential investment structures.

Several reforms have already modernized Morocco’s financial sector, including updates to the Investment Charter and the development of the Casablanca Stock Exchange as a regional platform.

These initiatives align with IMQR criteria, which reward managers who operate within a strong regulatory framework and demonstrate strategic vision.

By showing the operational quality of Moroccan asset managers through a tailored rating scale, Fitch Ratings enhances the transparency and attractiveness of Casablanca’s financial market for institutional investors.

Ultimately, IMQRs are more than a technical indicator: they represent a strategic opportunity for Morocco to assert itself as a leading financial player in Africa and the Mediterranean, with management quality measured rigorously and contextually.
