Rabat – A devastating fire has struck a residential complex in Hong Kong, leaving dozens dead, hundreds displaced, and an entire community in shock as authorities race to assess the full scale of the tragedy.
At least 65 people have died in a massive blaze at Wang Fuk Court, where flames surged up 32 floors in just five minutes, according to a building expert.
The death toll has remained unchanged for several hours as emergency teams continue search and rescue efforts.
Officials earlier said 279 people were unaccounted for, and it remains unclear how many are still missing or how many residents were able to evacuate in time. It is also not yet known how many people managed to leave the building safely.
Hong Kong leader John Lee said the fires across all seven buildings were “basically under control,” although live footage still showed active flames visible through some windows, suggesting the situation has not fully stabilized.
The government announced immediate financial support for those affected. Each household will receive 10,000 Hong Kong dollars in emergency relief, while a broader assistance fund of 300 million Hong Kong dollars will be created for residents of the housing estate.
The incident has revived debate over the use of bamboo scaffolding in the city. The material, long valued for its flexibility and low cost, is now under scrutiny for its flammability.
Lee confirmed that authorities will inspect all bamboo scaffolding across Hong Kong and that relevant bodies will meet to consider a possible shift to metal alternatives.
Survivors have begun sharing their experiences with reporters on the scene. One man told CNN he heard people screaming for help on Wednesday afternoon before smoke poured past his window. Others questioned whether fire alarms in the complex functioned properly.
About 500 displaced residents are now staying in nine emergency shelters. Medical care is in place, with 250 doctors and another 250 health professionals assigned to support those affected.
Emergency services continue to assess the damage and search for any remaining survivors.
