Rabat – Morocco’s Transport Minister Abdessamad Kayouh recently celebrated a strong rebound between 2022-2025 in Morocco’s transport sector.
Kayouh told MPs at the House of Councillors on Monday that the sector exceeded its pre-COVID-19 performances across multiple areas, citing rail, air travel, and maritime freight.
In terms of rail transport, Kayouh said indicators of Morocco’s Railways Office (ONCF) show a positive trend with passenger numbers exceeding 55 million in 2024 compared to 45.9 million in 2022.
Freight volume reached 21 million tonnes last year, he said.
As for air transport, the sector also continued to improve with a significant growth in international air traffic.
Last year, the Moroccan airports recorded what Kayouh described as an “unprecedented milestone,” welcoming over 32.6 million passengers – both arrivals and departures – compared to 20.5 million in 2022.
The number also contributes to strengthening Morocco’s position as an attractive tourist and economic destination.
Tourism revenues reached $11.3 billion through the first ten months of this year, surpassing the country’s entire 2024 tourism earnings of last year.
In the first ten months this year, Morocco also welcomed 16.6 million visitors, representing a 14% increase compared to 2023.
Kayoub also cited the importance of the 2025 Marhaba Operation, an annual Moroccan initiative facilitating the return and transit of Moroccans residing abroad during summer seasons.
Kayouh said that the operation this year, from June 5 to September 10, marked a total of 3.19 million passengers and 738,000 vehicles that crossed Moroccan borders in both directions, marking an increase of 7% for passengers and 6% for vehicles compared to the previous operation.
“These figures demonstrate the success of efforts to improve reception conditions and enhance services offered to members of the Moroccan diaspora,” the minister said.
In terms of maritime freight transport, the sector experienced significant growth with total port traffic rising from 192.1 million tonnes in 2021 to 24.2 million tonnes in 2024.
The number represents an increase of nearly 25%.
As for road transport, Kayouh said the sector is marked by sustained dynamism driven by improved vocational training.
He cited clear improvement between 2021and 2024 in the financial indicators of public institutions and companies operating in the transport and logistics sector.
