A single DNS fault inside AWS set off cascading failures that took down more than 14,000 websites and caused over $1 billion in estimated losses within two hours.
Platforms like Coinbase, MetaMask, and Robinhood were among those affected, demonstrating how access to crypto services can become inaccessible in an instant when centralized cloud systems fail.
A decentralized industry built on centralized foundations
According to the crypto.news opinion, the outage exposed an inconvenient truth: while blockchains are decentralized, the services that allow everyday users to interact with them are not.
Crypto exchanges, wallets, and identity tools rely heavily on AWS and other hyperscale cloud providers, making the broader ecosystem vulnerable to outages that originate far outside the blockchain itself.
The article notes that AWS hosts more than 90% of Fortune 100 companies, giving it an extraordinary concentration of control over the functioning of modern digital systems.
Even with built-in redundancy, AWS could not prevent the regional DNS disruption from spreading across dependent services, nor stop further disruptions caused by data resynchronization once systems came back online.
The opinion stresses that this is not an isolated crypto problem. Governments are building national digital ID systems, payment infrastructure, and AI models on the same centralized backbone.

For crypto specifically, the outage forces a fundamental question about what decentralization actually means in practice. If the primary gateways to blockchain networks collapse during a cloud failure, then the ecosystem inherits the same fragility as the Web2 systems it aims to improve.
Distributed verification as a path forward
