Rabat— Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses have slipped two spots in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking, published Thursday, and now sit in 66th place. This drop places them at the edge of Africa’s top five, marking the end of the year with a slight decline from their continental peak.
Earlier in August, following their runner-up finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Morocco, the team was ranked third on the continent. Recent results, including a November training camp where they drew with Burkina Faso (1-1) and lost to South Africa (2-0), contributed to their fall in the rankings.
On the African continent, Morocco now ranks fifth behind Nigeria (37th), South Africa (55th), Ghana (62nd), and Zambia (64th). Meanwhile, global leaders remain largely unchanged: Spain holds the top position after winning the UEFA Women’s Nations League, the United States stays second, and Germany moves up to third with the strongest progress in the Top 10. Other notable changes include Sweden dropping two places, France falling one spot, and Canada slipping slightly, while Brazil and North Korea climb modestly in the standings.
Still, Morocco women remain among Africa’s strongest teams, with continental and individual achievements.
