Morocco has in recent days seen a renewed wave of youth-led demonstrations as members of Generation Z returned to the streets of Casablanca and Rabat. The gatherings, largely organized through social media platforms, reflect the re-emergence of a movement that first gained visibility earlier this year.

Marked by peaceful marches and symbolic gestures, these protests highlight growing frustrations among young Moroccans regarding economic conditions, employment opportunities, and social justice issues. Participants, many in their late teens and early twenties, expressed concerns about rising living costs and a perceived lack of responsiveness from institutions to youth demands.

Casablanca: a Return to the city’s boulevards

In Casablanca, crowds assembled in key public spaces after calls circulated online encouraging young people to “reclaim their voice.” The manifestations remained orderly, with participants chanting slogans that centered on dignity, opportunity, and reform. Traffic slowed in several central districts as demonstrators moved in coordinated groups, reflecting an organized and disciplined mobilization.

Rabat: youth bring energy to the political capital

In Rabat, the country’s political hub, demonstrators gathered near symbolic institutions, reinforcing the capital’s longstanding role as a center for national expression. The presence of students and first-time protesters was particularly notable, indicating the movement’s growing appeal among young Moroccans navigating uncertain economic futures.

A growing youth consciousness

Observers note that these manifestations reflect a broader shift in youth activism in Morocco. Gen Z participants are using digital tools not only to organize rapidly but also to articulate a collective identity centered on transparency, fairness, and accountability. Their return to the streets suggests that their concerns remain unresolved and that the movement is far from fading.

Peaceful Expression and Public Reaction

So far, the demonstrations have been largely peaceful, with no major incidents reported. Public reaction has been mixed, many citizens express solidarity with the youth’s demands, while others worry about potential instability. Nonetheless, the movement has reignited national discussions about youth empowerment and socioeconomic reform.

As the demonstrations continue, all eyes remain on how the momentum will shape public dialogue and whether decision-makers will respond to the renewed energy of Morocco’s Gen Z.
