Rabat – The National Road Safety Agency warned all road users to stay vigilant and postpone non-essential travel amid heavy rainfall and snowy weather.
In a statement today, the agency recalled an orange-level alert from Morocco’s weather office, predicting heavy, thunderous rainfall as well as strong stormy winds and snowfall – starting Tuesday in several provinces across the country.
The agency urged public passenger bus drivers and freight truck drivers to exercise extra attention and caution while driving. It also urged drivers to monitor weather notices when planning trips between cities and provinces.
The adverse weather conditions multiply the risks of traffic accidents, the agency said, urging drivers to subject their vehicles to regular mechanical maintenance and conduct thorough technical inspections for their safety.
It also urged drivers to get sufficient rest before driving, citing fatigue and inattention as a result of traffic accidents.
The statement also warned drivers to prevent skidding on wet, snowy, or icy roads and to avoid excessive speed.
It also urged drivers to respect the legal safe distance between vehicles, both inside and outside urban areas.
Today, the weather office expects snowfall to start on Tuesday at midnight and continue on Wednesday, with accumulations reaching 50 to 80 centimeters in the provinces of Al Haouz, Ouarzazate, and Azilal.
Snowfall between 30 and 50 centimeters is expected in Ifrane, Chichaoua, Beni Mellal, Khenifra, Midelt, Taroudant, and Tinghir.
