Rabat – As Morocco’s gaming industry continues its steady rise, a new initiative is putting the spotlight on how play can become a powerful tool for learning and social change.

Later this month, global tech company Lenovo and youth entrepreneurship network Enactus Morocco will bring together students, developers, and creatives for the “Hackathon Gaming for Impact & Education,” an event designed to rethink gaming beyond entertainment

Scheduled for December 26 and 27 in Casablanca, the two-day hackathon will gather young participants from across disciplines — including game development, design, and project leadership — around the shared challenge of creating interactive gaming solutions that address educational and societal issues.

The initiative comes at a moment when gaming is gaining unprecedented traction in Morocco, particularly among young people, making it a natural platform for engagement and experimentation.

Industry figures currently value Morocco’s gaming market at nearly MAD 2 billion, with an annual growth rate of around 9%.

Almost one in four Moroccans plays video games regularly, and close to half of them are between the ages of 15 and 24.

These numbers underline why gaming is increasingly being perceived not just as leisure, but as a gateway to skills development, creativity, and civic awareness.

Turning play into purpose

Far from traditional competitions, the hackathon is structured as a collaborative innovation space. Participants will work in teams for 48 hours, receiving support from workshops and mentoring sessions led by professionals from the technology and entrepreneurship ecosystems.

Their goal will be to design game-based concepts or prototypes with measurable educational or social impact, touching on themes such as inclusion, environmental awareness, and responsible innovation.

Organizers say the event aims to challenge long-standing perceptions around video games by highlighting their capacity to foster problem-solving, engagement, and learning.

By placing young creators at the center of the process, the hackathon seeks to turn gamers into changemakers, using familiar digital tools to tackle real-world challenges.

For Lenovo, the initiative also reflects a broader strategy focused on youth empowerment and innovation through technology.

The company is using the hackathon to showcase how advanced tools — including artificial intelligence and immersive technologies — can support creativity and learning when placed in the hands of emerging talent.

Its gaming-oriented product lines are positioned as enablers for young developers and creators looking to explore interactive design and digital production.

Meanwhile, Enactus Morocco sees the event as a natural extension of its long-standing mission to support social entrepreneurship among young people.

Since its launch in 2003, the organization has supported more than 120,000 Moroccan youth and helped develop hundreds of high-impact projects and startups.

By integrating gaming into this ecosystem, Enactus hopes to open a new pathway for innovation that speaks directly to the interests and realities of today’s generation.

As Morocco continues to invest in digital transformation and youth-led innovation, the Hackathon Gaming for Impact & Education comes as a timely experiment that blends technology, creativity, and social responsibility and reimagines how games can help shape the country’s future.
