Rabat – Head coach Walid Regragui reaffirmed his earlier remarks about being the best choice to lead the team to the AFCON trophy.

In a press conference today ahead of the Zambia game, Regragui was asked if he still believes Moroccans won’t find a better coach than him to secure the trophy.”

“Yes, I still think so; otherwise I wouldn’t be sitting here. I have even more confidence than everyone else, I believe, in this group and this team. And we know that in a competition- even more so in the Africa Cup of Nations, but in all competitions in general- it’s at the end of the show that the musicians get paid.”

Regragui said his main goal is to win to stay at the top of the group — and to remain based in Rabat for the next stage of the tournament.

“Later, there will be the famous direct know-out stage. The most important thing today is to continue our progress to win this game and finish first to stay in Rabat. This is our objective,” Regragui said.

For his part, football star Achraf Hakimi echoed the same remarks by Regragui, describing the game as a big match tomorrow.

“We are ready, as the coach said. We have short-term objectives, including qualifying and staying ahead in the group to remain in Rabat,” Hakimi said.

“We are happy now, and we will continue like this,” the football star added.

Regragui commented on Brahim Diaz’ performance in the competition, saying he is happy to have him in the lineup.

He added that Diaz received criticism during friendlies with Morocco, as they are expecting a lot from him.

“He knows what we are expecting from him. He is a key player for us,” Regragui said.

Hakimi responded to remarks on the Morocco vs Mali game, describing the Malian team as a strong team.

“This AFCON is not easy… I know that supporters and journalists are very demanding; they want Morocco to win every game… but it is not easy. Keep your shoulders and head,” Hakimi said.

He acknowledged that a lot of improvement should be made, promising the team will do their best.

Morocco opened its campaign with a win against Comoros, followed by a draw with Mali, results that sparked criticism, particularly over coaching decisions.

Regragui responded by stressing that what truly matters is securing victories and maintaining strong performances throughout the competition, noting that the team remains focused and determined heading into the decisive encounter.

Morocco will play its third and final game as part of the Group stage tomorrow at 8 p.m. in Rabat.
