Rabat – The collapse of a house in Akkari, in the Kasr El Bahr area in Rabat, claimed the lives of at least two people today.
Morocco’s news agency MAP confirmed the news, saying that four other victims were injured.
Security services and civil protection cordoned off the area throughout the evening in an effort to rescue and help the victims.
Converging reports have quoted locals as confirming that they teamed up to rescue people, including children. The collapsed house was an at-risk building, according to residents.
Morocco has seen several similar incidents in recent months, including the collapse of two buildings in the city of Fez last December.
At least 22 people died during the collapse of the building.
In 2023, authorities said the ministry identified around 12,000 buildings as vulnerable in Marrakech and about 20 villages in the Al Haouz region.
Authorities attributed the vulnerability of the identified buildings to the earthquake that hit the Al Haouz region on September 8, 2023.
The earthquake caused damage in over 2,900 villages across Morocco.
