Rabat—Record seven-time champions Egypt face defending holders Côte d’Ivoire in a heavyweight quarter-final showdown at the AFCON Morocco 2025. The team that wins this match will move on to face Senegal, who just qualified yesterday after beating Mali.
The history between these two giants runs deep. Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire are set for their 23rd overall meeting, making it the most-played fixture in AFCON history. Historically, the Pharaohs have controlled this matchup at the tournament, securing seven open-play victories and three penalty shootout wins. The Ivorians, by contrast, have managed just a single win against Egypt in all their previous AFCON encounters.
This is only the second time they’ve met in a quarter-final. The first was back in 1998, when Egypt went through on penalties after a 0–0 draw. Four of their previous knockout games ended in stalemates, and Egypt won all three of those penalty shootouts. The only time we really saw goals in a knockout was in 2008, when Egypt dominated with a 4–1 semi-final win.

Egypt Team News
The Pharaohs booked their spot in the quarter-finals with a 3–1 extra-time victory over Benin, pushing their impressive unbeaten AFCON run to 14 matches.
This is their 11th quarter-final appearance and they haven’t been beaten at this stage since 2002. Egypt is simply built for high pressure; they’ve become synonymous with tight knockout encounters. In fact, their last five elimination games have all pushed past regular time and into extra time, often going down to the wire with penalty shootouts.
Mohamed Salah is still absolutely central to Egypt’s chances. His goal against Benin in extra time was his 10th at the AFCON, making him Egypt’s third-highest scorer in tournament history. He’s scored in three straight matches now—a first for him—and his three goals so far are already his best return in a single AFCON tournament.
Under head coach Hossam Hassan, who actually played in many AFCON matches against the Ivorians himself, Egypt has really started showing better attacking efficiency lately. They got off to a rough start in the tournament, but they’ve managed to win three of their last four games.
Côte d’Ivoire Team News
The defending champions are feeling great. Côte d’Ivoire is on an eight-game unbeaten run, after a dominant 3–0 win over Burkina Faso in the last round. They haven’t lost a knockout game in open play since 2012.
This is Côte d’Ivoire’s 12th time in the AFCON quarter-finals, and they have a great track record, having made it past this stage eight times before. A win today would send them to their 12th semi-final and keep their strong recent run going. They’ve actually won their last four knockout matches in open play.
Amad Diallo is easily one of the standout players of the tournament so far, having scored three goals, the most an Ivorian has managed since Didier Drogba back in 2012. Franck Kessié has also been key, creating many chances for the team. They’re also dangerous late in games, with three goals in the final 15 minutes.
Coach Emerse Faé has a personal history with this rivalry, having been part of the Ivorian teams that Egypt knocked out in 2006 and 2008. His side is determined to finally get revenge against a team that has historically blocked their way to glory.
