Rabat – Aziz Akhannouch, Head of Government and President of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), confirms that his leadership of the party will come to an end with the upcoming national congress, putting an end to speculation about a possible new mandate.
According to converging reports, during an exchange this morning in Rabat with directors of media organizations, Akhannouch stated that the RNI will hold an extraordinary national congress on February 7 in El Jadida.
The meeting will open the way for a full renewal of the party’s structures and the election of a new president.
Akhannouch described his decision as the result of a long-held conviction rather than a sudden choice.
He recalled that he has always opposed unlimited leadership mandates and argues that restricting the party presidency to two terms offers clarity and institutional balance.
Addressing questions about political timing, Akhannouch acknowledged the difficulty of remaining at the helm for only a few months before handing over power, which he said would send an unconvincing signal, according to the same sources.
At the same time, he rejected the idea of leaving immediately after an electoral success, describing such a scenario as equally problematic.
Reflecting on his years at the head of the party, Akhannouch pointed to what he describes as a deep organizational shift across Morocco’s twelve regions.
He recalled that during his leadership, the party strengthened structures, developed its headquarters, and launched major initiatives, adding that a new phase is set to begin.
Akhannouch said he will leave the RNI in a stable position and views this moment as the right one for leadership renewal. He presented his departure as the natural conclusion of a mission rather than a withdrawal under pressure.
