Mohammedia – Apple is teaming up with their biggest rival – Google – in a multi-year partnership that will see the tech giant rely on Gemini to power future artificial intelligence features, including upgrades to Siri.
The agreement marks a notable shift for Apple, which has long emphasized building and controlling its technology stack internally.
In a joint statement released Monday, the companies said the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be built on Google’s Gemini models and cloud infrastructure.
These models will underpin upcoming Apple Intelligence features and a more personalized version of Siri that Apple says will arrive later this year.
Apple added that its AI services will continue to run primarily on devices and through its Private Cloud Compute system, maintaining the company’s existing privacy standards.
The announcement confirms earlier reports that Apple had been in talks with Google after testing AI technologies from several competitors.
While neither company disclosed financial terms, previous reporting suggested Apple could be paying Google around $1 billion for access to its AI technology. The agreement is not exclusive, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Apple has faced growing scrutiny over the pace of its AI development, particularly as rivals have released high-profile generative AI tools that quickly captured public attention.

Siri, once a pioneer in voice assistants, is increasingly viewed as lagging behind newer offerings.
Apple has acknowledged delays to a more advanced version of Siri, though it has reiterated that an upgraded assistant is expected to launch this year, with earlier reports pointing to a spring rollout.
Despite the criticism, Apple has been steadily expanding its AI capabilities. The company introduced the first version of Apple Intelligence in 2024, bringing features such as smarter photo search and notification summaries to its operating systems.
Unlike some competitors, Apple has emphasized quieter, system-level AI enhancements rather than standalone chat-style products, a strategy that has drawn mixed reactions from users.
The partnership also unfolds against a complex legal backdrop for Google. The company is currently battling multiple antitrust cases in the United States, including one that closely examined its long-standing relationship with Apple.
In August 2024, a federal judge ruled that Google had acted illegally to preserve its dominance in online search by paying companies like Apple to make Google the default search engine.
Court filings showed Google paid Apple about $38 billion between 2021 and 2022 for those placements.
In December 2025, the court issued final remedies limiting Google’s ability to enter exclusive default agreements. Apple and Google have said their new AI partnership complies with those restrictions.
