Rabat – Bahrain has renewed its clear and firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as a realistic solution to the dispute.

The Gulf country reaffirmed this position in a joint statement issued during the official visit of the President of Morocco’s House of Councillors, Mohamed Ould Errachid, to Bahrain from 12 to 16 January. The visit took place at the invitation of the Speaker of Bahrain’s Shura Council, Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh.

According to a statement from the House of Councillors, Bahrain welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on 31 October 2025, describing it as an important step toward reaching a realistic and lasting solution to the Western Sahara issue. The Bahraini side reiterated its consistent support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and its autonomy proposal.

Morocco has made significant diplomatic gains regarding the Western Sahara issue in recent years. An increasing number of countries have expressed support for the Moroccan autonomy plan as the most serious and credible solution.

The adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 last October further confirmed the international community’s support for a political solution based on realism, compromise, and Morocco’s initiative.

The joint statement said the visit reflects the strong brotherly relations between the two countries, in line with the guidance of King Mohammed VI and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Discussions during the visit focused on the depth of historical ties between the two countries, based on solidarity, mutual respect, and continuous coordination on issues of common interest.

Both sides celebrated the strong level of bilateral relations and the important role the two legislative institutions play in strengthening parliamentary cooperation and parliamentary diplomacy, in a way that serves the national interests of both countries.

The Speaker of Bahrain’s Shura Council stated that the long-standing historical ties and close cooperation between Morocco and Bahrain reflect shared values, strong partnership, and a common destiny. He also commended Morocco’s efforts to promote parliamentary dialogue and cooperation among Arab and African parliaments, as well as its role in hosting constructive parliamentary meetings.

For his part, Mohamed Ould Errachid commended Bahrain’s active role at the Asian level and its contribution to strengthening regional parliamentary work and dialogue. He also welcomed Bahrain’s upcoming presidency of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly starting in January 2026, and expressed confidence that this role will further enhance cooperation among Asian countries.

Ould Errachid also expressed Morocco’s readiness to work closely with Bahrain to build stronger parliamentary bridges between Africa and Asia, support South-South dialogue, and promote peace, development, and shared prosperity.

Both sides agreed to further strengthen cooperation between Bahrain’s Shura Council and Morocco’s House of Councillors through joint mechanisms, increased exchange visits, and closer coordination within regional and international parliamentary forums.

The visit concluded with a shared commitment to continue deepening bilateral and parliamentary cooperation, in line with the aspirations of the Moroccan and Bahraini peoples for greater progress and prosperity.
