Microsoft: Just 1 in 10 Moroccans Uses Generative AI

The low statistic places Morocco 5th in North Africa and 12th in the continent, making the government’s new AI initiatives with the Maroc IA 2030 roadmap even more crucial.

Microsoft: Just 1 in 10 Moroccans Uses Generative AI

Agadir – Microsoft has published a recent report that compares the artificial intelligence use among different nations, with illuminating data about Morocco: only 1 in 10 Moroccans regularly used the tool within the past year.

This means that generative AI use in the North African country remains limited.

The report shows that 10.9% of Moroccans have used generative AI, placing Morocco fifth in North Africa, behind several countries like Libya (13.7%), Egypt (13.4%), Tunisia (12.7%), and Algeria (12.0%).

Across Africa, Morocco ranks 12th, with South Africa leading at 21.29% adoption. On the global stage, Morocco sits 87th, in the lower range of countries where between 10% and 19% of people use generative AI, well below higher adoption brackets of 20%–29%, 30%–39%, 40% or more.

Despite the lower rate than its neighbors, Microsoft did mention that Morocco’s AI use is growing. In 2025, the rate increased by 0.3% between the first and second halves of the year. However, this growth was smaller than the global average increase of 1.2% over the same period, indicating slower uptake relative to other countries.

Globally, more and more people were using generative AI in 2025. By the end of 2025, about 16.3% of the global population had used tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot. However, there is a major inequality in adoption between countries.

Global North countries are seeing much faster growth in AI usage than developing countries within the Global South. Specifically, the data shows that Global North countries utilized AI nearly twice as much as those in the Global South.

This growth illustrates that access to AI depends heavily on digital infrastructure, internet availability, investment in technology, and education.

Countries with better resources can adopt AI more quickly, while others face barriers that slow down usage, creating a widening global gap in who benefits from these technologies.

The United Arab Emirates tops the rankings, with 64.0% of its working‑age population using AI, up from 59.4% earlier in the year. Singapore follows at 60.9%. Other high adopters include Norway, Ireland, France, Spain, and New Zealand, all exceeding 40% usage.

Morocco and AI

Against this backdrop, Morocco is making sweeping efforts to incorporate AI into various fabrics of society.

On January 12, Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform launched the Maroc IA 2030 roadmap, to structure AI development and reinforce the country’s digital sovereignty.

The roadmap aims to coordinate AI initiatives across public institutions, research centers, and the private sector. It places a strong emphasis on governance, skills development, and innovation.

This initiative also supports the creation of a national network of AI centers known as the Jazari Institutes. These hubs are designed to promote research, training, and the practical application of AI technologies.

Additionally, Morocco is focusing on localizing AI tools, particularly in the area of language technologies. The country is supporting the development of generative AI models capable of understanding Moroccan Darija and Amazigh languages.

This step is being carried out through partnerships with international AI companies, including Mistral AI, reflecting Morocco’s linguistic and cultural reality.
