Agadir – European countries are launching a military mission in Greenland, deploying troops and military personnel from France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway to counter US President Donald Trump’s threats that his country “needs Greenland for national security reasons.”
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on social media that “the first French military elements are already en route,” with additional units to follow.
According to the Danish Ministry of Defense, these deployments, which include aircraft, naval assets, and reconnaissance teams, are intended “with a view to possible military contributions to support Denmark in ensuring security in the region, for example in the area of maritime surveillance capabilities.” Germany has confirmed a 13-member reconnaissance team will take part in the mission.
Trump’s calls for taking over the Danish country continue to be met with alarm. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said after meetings in Washington with Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio that “fundamental disagreements” persist, particularly over Trump’s public push to “conquer” Greenland which Danish leaders called “totally unacceptable.”
Trump has framed Greenland strategically vital for US national security. He links the island to American defense projects and views it as important for countering the growing influence from Russia and China in the Arctic region.
The president has gone so far to say that the US will take over Greenland even if this result may include force intervention. He considers Greenland a key location for monitoring the Arctic and maintaining military advantage.
Both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any idea of giving the island to the US. Greenland remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and its officials insist that sovereignty will not be compromised.
Amidst Trump’s threats, the European Union and NATO have emphasized the need to respect Greenland’s sovereignty and international law as well as reinforcing Arctic security.
