Rabat – After weeks of sustained rainfall across several regions, Morocco sees a tangible shift in its water outlook.
National reserves now exceed 8 billion cubic meters, a level unseen for months and a sharp contrast with the same period last year. The rise, close to 70%, brings a measure of relief in a country that continues to face structural water stress.
Figures published by Maa Dialna, the official platform that monitors national water resources, show total stored volumes at 8.068 billion cubic meters. This represents an increase of nearly 3.3 billion cubic meters compared to January 2025.
Dams across the country record an average filling rate of 48.1%, a clear improvement after successive dry seasons.
Across Morocco, several key dams post notable gains. In Tiznit province, Youssef Ben Tachfine dam records the largest recent inflow, with 16.9 million cubic meters added to its reserves, lifting its filling rate to 44%.
Al Massira dam, located in Settat province and long affected by low levels, receives 16.5 million cubic meters, though its overall filling rate remains limited at 9.4%.
Further inland, Bin El Ouidane dam in Azilal adds 11.5 million cubic meters, raising its filling rate to 28%.

In Taounate, Al Wahda dam reaches 60.5% after an inflow of 10.9 million cubic meters, while Idriss I dam climbs to 46.7% with an additional 4.3 million cubic meters. Ahmed Al Hansali dam, in Beni Mellal, records 7.9 million cubic meters, bringing its filling rate to 47.2%.
The impact appears even clearer in the Loukkos and Moulouya basins, where several dams now operate at full capacity.
Ministry data indicate that four dams in the Loukkos basin reach 100% this season. Oued El Makhazine dam, with a capacity of more than 672 million cubic meters, now stands full, compared to just over 73% at the same time last year.
Nakhla dam, which plays a central role in regional water transfers, also reached full capacity after standing at 46% a year ago. Chefchaouen dam and Cherif Al Idrissi dam follow the same trend, each now fully filled after levels hovered around 82-83% last year.
In eastern Morocco, the Hassan II dam, also known as El Ghrass and located on Oued Za, reaches 100% as well. With a capacity exceeding 94 million cubic meters, the dam offers further evidence of the scale of recent inflows.
These gains boost Morocco’s ability to secure drinking water supplies, support irrigation, and meet industrial demand.
Higher surface water levels also support groundwater recharge, which remains critical for farming communities and urban supply alike.
