Marrakech – Abdelmalek Essaâdi University announced Sunday the suspension of all classes starting today due to severe weather disruptions expected across the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region.
The university’s presidency stated it decided to postpone all educational and scientific activities scheduled from Monday “until weather conditions improve, aiming to preserve the safety of students, teachers, and administrative staff.”
The decision affects all academic activities, including classes, conferences, thesis defenses, and scientific conferences, as well as administrative and educational services across university establishments in Tétouan, Tanger, Al Hoceima, Larache, and Ksar El Kébir.
The university said the measure follows Sunday’s weather alert issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) warning of heavy precipitation in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region, and implements recommendations from regional monitoring committees.
Educational authorities across the region have taken similar precautionary measures. Provincial education directorates announced temporary class suspensions in multiple provinces due to expected climate disruptions.
The Tanger-Assilah provincial directorate suspended classes Monday in all public and private schools following ministerial note 2663 and local monitoring committee recommendations. Officials said the situation would be reevaluated based on weather developments.
Tetouan’s directorate cited the weather alert announcing intense rains, the state of rivers in the mountainous province, and monitoring committee recommendations for its Monday suspension decision.
The situation proves most severe in Ksar El Kébir, where local authorities continue evacuation operations due to flooding caused by rising water levels at Oued Al Makhazine dam. Education authorities suspended classes from Monday to Saturday in all public and private schools, activating distance learning to compensate for affected sessions.
Other provinces implemented varying suspension periods. Chefchaouen suspended classes Monday and Tuesday, while Ouezzane suspended rural school classes for the same period due to rising water levels in rivers and streams.
M’diq-Fnideq suspended classes Monday in Alleyine and Belyounech communes and specific schools in urban areas.
The weather service issued red and orange-level alerts for strong winds reaching 75-90 km/h, heavy rainfall ranging from 50-80mm to as much as 150 mm in northern provinces, and significant snowfall at elevations above 1,500 meters through Wednesday.
The university presidency concluded it would closely monitor weather developments to update decisions based on improved conditions and provincial monitoring committee recommendations.
