Storms, Snow, and Strong Winds Set to Hit Several Morocco Provinces

Rabat – Morocco faces a spell of severe weather today and Wednesday, with heavy rain, snowfall at higher elevations, and strong wind gusts forecast across a wide range of provinces, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).

In a red-level alert, the DGM warned of intense rainfall, at times accompanied by thunderstorms, with accumulations between 100 and 150 millimeters expected in Chefchaouen and Tetouan.

The alert remains in effect from today at noon until Wednesday at 11 p.m., raising concerns over flooding and difficult travel conditions.

An orange-level alert covers several northern and central provinces, where rainfall totals may range from 60 to 100 millimeters during the same period. These areas include M’Diq-Fnideq, Tanger-Assilah, Ouezzane, Larache, Fahs-Anjra, Al Hoceima, and Taounate.

Moderate to heavy rain is also forecast in Khenifra and Ifrane, with totals between 30 and 40 millimeters this afternoon and evening. Kenitra and Taza may receive between 35 and 50 millimeters this afternoon through Wednesday midday.

Snowfall is also expected, particularly in mountainous regions. The DGM forecast snow accumulations of 10 to 30 centimeters at elevations above 1,600 meters from today at noon until Wednesday morning. Provinces concerned include Sefrou, Boulemane, Taza, Guercif, Ifrane, Midelt, and Beni Mellal.

Strong winds add to the weather risks. Gusts between 75 and 85 km/h are forecast this afternoon and evening in provinces such as Boulemane, Taza, Sefrou, Ifrane, Tinghir, Figuig, Jerada, Tata, Ouarzazate, and Midelt.

Higher wind speeds, reaching up to 90 km/h, are expected from Tuesday evening through Wednesday night in a broader list of provinces across the north, northeast, center, and southeast, including Tangier-Tetouan areas, parts of the Fez-Meknes region, the Oriental region, and several inland provinces.

Authorities urge residents to remain cautious, limit unnecessary travel, and follow official guidance, particularly in areas prone to flooding, snow accumulation, or strong winds.
