Rabat – Authorities in flood-prone areas across several provinces carried out a large-scale and gradual evacuation of residents in response to severe flood risks. According to officials, the evacuation process successfully relocated over 108,423 people as of Wednesday morning.

The official spokesperson of the Ministry of Interior, Rachid El Khalfi, said continuous and proactive measures have been taking place over the past days to address exceptional situations caused by the severe weather.

He made his remarks on Wednesday, stressing that the country’s authorities implemented a preventive approach aimed at protecting lives and property before risks escalate.

El Khalfi detailed that the operation involved intensive field mobilization. Morocco’s armed forces were deployed in coordination with the Ministry of Interior and other stakeholders to oversee and ensure the smooth evacuation and transfer of a total of 108,423 citizens.

In Larache province, 81,709 people have relocated, particularly in the hardest-hit city of Ksar El Kebir – where 85% of evacuees left using their own means.

Evacuations also affected Sidi Kacem province, where 9,728 people were relocated, followed by Sidi Slimane province with 2,853 people and Kenitra province with 14,133 people.

The preventive measures helped limit the impact of the exceptional situation, ensuring the safety and security of all.

The interior ministry spokesperson also emphasized that emergency services continue to support affected populations by establishing temporary shelters and reception centers, providing different forms of assistance to mitigate the effects of the difficult conditions.

He recalled the weather alert, which expects the possibility of rainfall reaching 150 millimeters in a short period in some areas, potentially causing unprecedented water inflow in the Oued Makhazine dam, where hydrological data shows a record rise in its reservoir.

El Khalfi reiterated the authorities appeals, urging citizens in Larache, Ksar El Kbir, Ouled Ouchih, as well as the Larache industrial area and areas adjacent to Oued Loukkos, to strictly comply with public authorities evacuation instructions and all measures to safeguard lives.

He also renewed the authorities’ commitment to continue to intensify efforts within the framework of comprehensive mobilization and continuous coordination to put in place all necessary measures to protect the population.
