Rabat – Bahrain joined a group of countries that extended their support for Morocco following floods that have killed at least four people in the north.
The Bahraini Foreign Affairs Ministry extended its solidarity and sympathy with Morocco in a statement on Thursday.
In the statement, the Gulf country sent its deepest condolences and sympathy to the government and Moroccans, especially the families of the victims.
It also wished the injured victims a speedy recovery and safety for all residents. The US and UK have UAE issued similar statements, extending support for Morocco.
Morocco has been witnessing extreme storms since mid-November.
While the rainfall was beneficial for the agricultural season, it flooded many areas across the country, particularly in the North, where at least four people died in Tetouan.
The floods resulted in mass evacuation campaigns, temporarily relocating 180,000 citizens as part of efforts to mitigate the crisis.
On Thursday, Morocco announced a state of disaster, launching an extensive support program with an estimated budget of MAD 3 billion to assist people affected by recent floods.
Morocco also declared the most affected communities, including Larache, Kenitra, Sidi Kacem, and Sidi Slimane, as disaster zones.
The government said the budget allocated will include support for farmers and livestock breeders, investments in rehabilitating infrastructure like roads, irrigation, hydro agricultural networks, and basic utilities.
King Mohammed VI urged the government to implement the program “efficiently, swiftly, and responsibly,” enabling citizens in the disaster-affected areas to return to their normal lives as quickly as possible.
