Speculation around Walid Regragui and Olympique de Marseille has intensified in mid-February 2026 following the departure of Roberto De Zerbi from the Ligue 1 side earlier this month and his name has consistently topped the list of potential successors.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, it suggests that he is a serious contender for the role. It’s a move that would make sense given his profile, and many are keeping a close eye on how negotiations develop.
According to information reported by Elbotola and echoed in France, Marseille officials have reached out to gauge Regragui’s availability as the club searches for a coach for next season. The French club is believed to have been monitoring him for some time, seeing his profile and track record as a strong fit for their long-term sporting project.
There has also been speculation around the possible involvement of former Morocco international Medhi Benatia, who is closely linked to Marseille’s sporting structure. However, sources have not confirmed whether he played a direct role in any contact between the club and Regragui. His brief resignation—later reversed—earlier this year has nonetheless added to the intrigue surrounding Marseille’s internal discussions.
Despite the reported interest, French media indicate that no concrete negotiations have been opened at this stage. Regragui’s name is one among several under consideration as Marseille looks to finalize a new head coach in the coming days.

Contract with Morocco remains key obstacle
Regragui is still under contract with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation until the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The federation has repeatedly dismissed rumors of his departure and reaffirmed its confidence in him to lead the national team through the tournament.
Any move to Marseille in the short term would therefore require a mutual agreement with the FRMF, something that currently appears unlikely. Sources close to the situation suggest that even if Marseille hold genuine interest, a post-World Cup scenario would be more realistic than an immediate switch during the international cycle.
Marseille exploring other options
While Regragui’s reputation makes him an attractive candidate, Marseille are also exploring alternative solutions. Reports in France point to the possibility of a short-term appointment to stabilize the club before committing to a long-term project, with other names, including Habib Beye, circulating internally.
The Moroccan coach continues to focus on his duties with the national team and preparations for the 2026 World Cup, including a full March international window with two friendlies, while Marseille is expected to confirm its next managerial choice soon.
A move could represent a major step in Regragui’s club-coaching career, but for now, his immediate future still appears tied to Morocco, at least until the international calendar allows for any potential transition.Â
